REDESIGN outlines framework for introducing Minimum Energy Performance Standards in public buildings

The REDESIGN project has published guidelines for the introduction of Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for the worst-performing public buildings. Under the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, Member States are required to renovate 16% of the least efficient public buildings by 2030 and 26% by 2033.

The framework defines the key steps for effective MEPS implementation: collecting reliable building data, creating financial mechanisms for municipalities, establishing clear monitoring and enforcement rules, and engaging local authorities and businesses.

By making renovation a mandatory process, MEPS will accelerate building upgrades, reduce energy costs, improve conditions in schools, hospitals and administrative buildings, and contribute to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.
